PS3 and the 2008 releases

I bought my PS3 about a year ago and since then I’ve been waiting for 3 great things. First, Metal Gear Solid 4, the so called “end” to the MGS saga, and it was great. A true revolutionary game (at least in concept) and it may have not lived up to the expectations of its creator, but I think it was well received by all the Metal Gear fans (and that is a lot to say).

Second, Little Big Planet. Now, I REALLY think we should be paying more attention to it (at least in Mexico) since it truly comes as a breakthrough in gaming. A simple and beautiful game with the capability of sharing all around the globe our activities and achievements. Now, everyone nows by know you can create your own levels and share them online (which has come as hope for me that people still can do great stuff), but it has so many small details that make it GREAT. You can rate and tag the levels you play and you can even take your picture on them and tag your character. Comments and “likes” give you a pretty good idea of what people think of your work. Everything in a beautiful GUI operated by your sackboy on a giant PS3 controller. The possibilities are infinite (to get a quick idea, do a search for “tetris” inside the game). Here is another sample in video, don’t miss out on this link.

Finally, Playstation Home. I’ve been excited about this since day 1, and I recently got my hands on a beta code for testing. It is basically a Second Life that actually runs, and without all the pr0n. For some reason new generation video game consoles have the urge to create communities (which I think it is an awesome idea), and PS Home does that better than any other console. You can chat (audio and text), share and play with other Home users around the globe. For now it really is a beta so there are few reasons to hang out in there, but as the community starts growing and we start getting more objects to buy and share it can become the most solid online community for gaming. Only time will tell. I made a quick demo (in spanish) so that you can get a pretty good idea of what there is to do.

Bottom line, if you don’t have a PS3 and you have the chance to get one, it is my number one recommendation for the holidays. Don’t forget there are a LOT of titles to choose from, like Mirror’s Edge and of course Guitar Hero and all that jazz.
