  • Akihabara tour by the Storm Tooper
  • Its great when the people you look up to comes up with something great. Its even greater when they hang up together and make something to remember.

My favorite video ever in YouTube is the classic Tokyo Dance Trooper and when I showed it to my good friend Oscar he said to me that it was made by his friend Danny Choo. Since then I’ve religiously followed the Storm Trooper on YouTube, and today I found out that he and Joi Ito, CEO of Creative Commons and many many many entrepreneurial activities (among other great things), made this special tour for Sillicon Valley personalities in Akihabara with Kirai as Darth Vader.

Both Joi and Kirai have been guests in my podcast and I’m very happy that I got the chance to chat a little bit with them.

The result of all this is a special BBTV episode. You can’t miss it. Here is the original post from Joi.

  • Helvetica, the documentary
  • I’ve wanted to post about this for a while now, but this is the perfect excuse. For a very brief period of time you can get this “special edition” Sharpie that writes in Helvetica (all you need is a lot of practice).

The pen comes as a souvenir with the purchase of the actual film which I believe is a true work of art by itself and the perfect gift for any passionate about graphic design. The documentary is made by Pleix Films, the guys behind that Moog documentary which I also love, and an long list of awesome DVDs.

Helvetica is all about typography (duh!), the way it was conceived, and how much it has influenced designers around the world, all in the words of true masters like Erik Spiekermann, Neville BrodyMatthew CarterPaula Scher and many many more. If you are somehow into design, this is a must see!

This is a small excerpt/trailer (my favorite).

  • PS3 and the 2008 releases
  • I bought my PS3 about a year ago and since then I’ve been waiting for 3 great things. First, Metal Gear Solid 4, the so called “end” to the MGS saga, and it was great. A true revolutionary game (at least in concept) and it may have not lived up to the expectations of its creator, but I think it was well received by all the Metal Gear fans (and that is a lot to say).

Second, Little Big Planet. Now, I REALLY think we should be paying more attention to it (at least in Mexico) since it truly comes as a breakthrough in gaming. A simple and beautiful game with the capability of sharing all around the globe our activities and achievements. Now, everyone nows by know you can create your own levels and share them online (which has come as hope for me that people still can do great stuff), but it has so many small details that make it GREAT. You can rate and tag the levels you play and you can even take your picture on them and tag your character. Comments and “likes” give you a pretty good idea of what people think of your work. Everything in a beautiful GUI operated by your sackboy on a giant PS3 controller. The possibilities are infinite (to get a quick idea, do a search for “tetris” inside the game). Here is another sample in video, don’t miss out on this link.

Finally, Playstation Home. I’ve been excited about this since day 1, and I recently got my hands on a beta code for testing. It is basically a Second Life that actually runs, and without all the pr0n. For some reason new generation video game consoles have the urge to create communities (which I think it is an awesome idea), and PS Home does that better than any other console. You can chat (audio and text), share and play with other Home users around the globe. For now it really is a beta so there are few reasons to hang out in there, but as the community starts growing and we start getting more objects to buy and share it can become the most solid online community for gaming. Only time will tell. I made a quick demo (in spanish) so that you can get a pretty good idea of what there is to do.

Bottom line, if you don’t have a PS3 and you have the chance to get one, it is my number one recommendation for the holidays. Don’t forget there are a LOT of titles to choose from, like Mirror’s Edge and of course Guitar Hero and all that jazz.

  • Short story about Dixo
  • In early 2005 I was working with my partner developing special radio shows fully sponsored by a brand. We intended to offer this as a new way of communicating with consumers, and started trying to sell this to Nokia here in Mexico. The obvious issue we found with this idea came when they tried to [...]

  • It has been a while… I could give some lazy excuses, but the truth is there always seems to be something more to do, or something more to read. I’m changing that from now on. A lot has happened since my last post:
